A firm which runs Europe’s largest and most complex nuclear site in west Cumbria is the first nuclear company in the world using 3D scanning and 3D Printing to help them decommission some of the most potentially hazardous plants in the world.
Donna Connor, the company’s head of technical capabilities, said: “Personally as a material scientist, 3D scanning and printing is the Holy Grail; the technology offers a huge amount of opportunity that we can exploit to continue the safe and accelerated clean up of Sellafield site.
We have seen a few musical instruments that have been 3D Printed recently but we can add the bagpipes to the list now.

A whale graveyard was found whilst widening the road in the Atacama Desert to the port town of Caldera, Chile. A little closer home, 3D Printing has been used in Gold Coast QLD to print our waterways.
Even closer to home is the 3D scanning at the Powerhouse Musuem for the Sydney Design Festival 2014.
The program is called ‘Hack the Collection’ and matches 10 contemporary designers with 10 objects from the collection that have been 3D scanned by Wysiwyg 3D Engineers. Designers will spend two intensive days hacking the 3D object files, and then 3d print their hacked object on Makerbot 3D printers.

The Smithsonian Museum continues to lead the way using 3D Scanning and 3D printing – to study some of the world’s most fragile artifacts without having to worry about damaging them through invasive examinations. Same goes for educators and students.
