With over 15 blockbuster movies under our belt in the 12 years we’ve been 3D Laser Scanning it’s still exciting to get the crew call on a big budget movie such as Unbroken with Angelina Jolie at the helm as Director.
Filmed at locations in and around Sydney including Cockatoo Island and Blacktown Sports Centre our engineers were equipped with the latest in portable scanning technology to capture everything from the props, sets and the hero’s. Using the right ‘tool’ for the job is paramount, with over 7 portable scanning technologies to choose from the Wysiwyg 3D Engineers will sometimes use a combination of scanners to get the right deliverable.
There is no room for second chances when 3d scanning on a movie. The Wysi3D engineers must guarantee that all the necessary details are captured fast the first time around making sure the film schedule is unaffected. The ultimate goal is to always capture the data as accurately as possible so that all computer-generated scenes look as real as possible.
Who didn’t jump when the shark attacked the lifeboat? – I sure did as did the whole audience in the cinema!
The visual effects professionals produce those scenes using the scan data that we generate by scanning the boat, the actors and the props such as the shark. Capturing the data is only 1/3 of the equation though, point clouds whilst look pretty are near on useless for anyone to import. Using an assortment of specialty 3D software packages our engineers are able to align, mesh, and produce 3D Cad models that can be imported into animation standard packages for the professionals to make that next action shot seamlessly blend into real camera footage.
